General Discussion

"Odd Couples" competition.

We, in the Open Shutter Subgroup, are due to discuss the recent “Odd Couples” Competition at our next Gathering on Thursday 19th December 1000ish till 1230ish at the kind invitation of Peter T in Golberdon, Callington. Details for joining us, on request-you might find it an enjoyable extension of TPC activities. Some of us have for over 10 years!- outline of the Subgroup's ethos is on TPC's website. I post my thoughts here for a wider circulation within The Club and welcome comment which we can carry into the Open Shutter Gathering.

Back to “Odd couples”

You may have seen my previous post here, of my interpretation of the theme, and my explanation of those images. I post these after the closing date so as not to influence “free thinking”. I will do again for the Tryptich- you may again be surprised with my unconventional take!

I did enjoyed the last judging- a slightly more open minded basis which explains the excellent 20 for Liz's shot. A variation of the thinking (but not fitting this entry) is one of mine “In opposition” which was shown to the Open Shutter Group and posted on the TPC Flickr in 2020, is attached below.

I did find difficulty differentiating between the interpretation this time and that of the previous “Portraits” Competition. Similarity in the images.

Also the relevance of “Odd” to some entries.

The Open Shutter initiating and subsequent several collaborations with the “Edge” of Tavistock was clearly in evidence in both the Competitions. I do all I can to foster this connection because it is not easy to find willing performers! We do periodically in Open Shutter arrange additional photoshoots with them. You may find that after the TPC Studio Lighting session you would enjoy playing again with newly gained skills!

I am reminded of extracts from a now old "Digital Camera" magazine:-

"...look for pictures that cause people to pause for thought".

"...creativity can be nurtured".

"Rip up the rule book.......experiment...." (But not if you want to win Competitions!)

Food for thought.

I found the judges position of high praise to all the images and obviously biased towards black and white (6 out of 10 images pulled back). Of the 23 images in Group A 17 were colour and 6 were black and white, thats nearly a 3 to 1 ratio. Then giving high praise to all images but very low markings to some didn't make a lot of sense to me and just demoralises the participants. I know competitions verge very much on the luck of the judges preferences, but this was obviously biased. The highest mark in Group B was 15 so why didn't the 15 get 20 as it was the top marks in that group? That said I really liked Liz's image well done.
